The Brand That Told You Not to Buy It

“Don't Buy This Jacket” ran on Black Friday, above a photo of one of Patagonia's best-selling fleeces. It should have been commercial self-sabotage. Instead it became a case study.

Durability as a business model

The message only works because the product backs it. Patagonia builds gear to be repaired, resold, and handed down — the Worn Wear program is a genuine second market, not a press release. Buying less of something that lasts longer is, counterintuitively, good for a company that owns the repair pipeline.

Is it perfect? No brand at this scale is. But as a template for how apparel can align margins with longevity, Patagonia remains the one everyone else quotes.
